Dangerous Heat & Severe Weather

Today: Hot and humid conditions will continue through the evening. A Heat Advisory is still in effect until 7 p.m this evening. Heat index values are expected to reach near 100° through the daytime hours. If working outside this afternoon work with caution and try to drink plenty of water.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms should stay along and north of I-80 through much of the afternoon. Tonight though will be a different story. Thunderstorm activity could slide southward around 6-7 p.m tonight, but the main threat for strong to severe thunderstorms will be late tonight after midnight.

The main threat for severe weather will be to the north/northwest of I-80 and I-88 (Rockford/Quad Cities – areas near the red). As the line of thunderstorms approach the central Illinois region, they’ll hit their mature stage and should begin to weaken. Heavy rainfall and damaging winds are still a major concern along the leading edge of the system. Some areas of small hail within the leading edge could be possible too.

Trends in model guidance have shown the frontal boundary moving towards the area sooner than before. Initial timing looked to be around 2-4 a.m for thunderstorm activity and I’ve since moved that timeframe forward by a couple hours.

Storms should stick around through the early morning and eventually taper off by around 6-7 a.m just in time for the morning commute.

With the cold front passing overnight, temperatures Wednesday will much cooler. Highs are expected in the upper 70s with overcast skies.
